The virtual interview used to be used sparingly, only for special circumstances. In light of COVID-19, it has become commonplace. Although it may seem as easy as turning on a webcam and answering some questions, leaving a lasting impression from a virtual interview requires just as much preparation as a face-to-face interview, if not more.
Luckily, we’ve compiled five tips to help you succeed in your next virtual interview.
1. Test your gear!
You will want to make sure your devices and internet connection are all working as soon as you are invited to a video interview. If the employer is using a specific application, ensure you download and get it prepared well in advance. On the day of the interview, log-in early and test your audio/video and internet connection again to make sure that everything is working according to plan.
2. Limit distractions
Choose a room that is quiet, clean, and professional looking. You do not want an interviewer to focus on what is around you instead of what you are saying. Make sure that the room you choose is away from any noise or people that could distract both you and the interviewer. A quiet and clean space can make or break the experience on both sides!
3. Dress to impress
Although the experience feels different, be sure to dress as if you are going in for an in-person interview. Be ready to put your best foot forward – and this includes dressing for the role. Don’t let a sloppy t-shirt be the reason a good impression isn’t made. If ever unsure, go with business casual.
4. Prepare, prepare, prepare!
Just because the interview is taking place over the computer, doesn’t mean that you have the time to look up answers on the fly! Prepare as you would for an in-person interview, which means having a natural conversation without being distracted by the technology. Prepare to answer common questions, as well as ask them!
5. Follow up
There is nothing quite like a good follow up email. Take the time to thank your interviewers for their time, sometimes it can make all the difference!
