Video interviews have become fairly popular these days within our industry. Often as a first step in the interview process, video interviews serve as a convenient way for the employer to meet a potential candidate and can be more engaging than a phone interview. As the interviewee, you want to be completely ready both mentally, and technically before the interview. Here are five steps to ensure your interview goes smoothly.
Prep your Tech
The last thing you want is your audio to not work when the interview starts. It helps to test your microphone, and webcam prior to the interview. Get a friend to give you a test video call to work out any kinks that occur.
Find Somewhere Quiet
It is important that you are seated somewhere where you can speak (and hear) freely. If this is in your house, make sure the background is neat and tidy. Your surroundings will help dictate your first impression with the employer. Like the last tip, having someone video call you beforehand to get an objective view of your surroundings will help iron out any issues.
Dress to Impress
Even though you are not meeting the employer in person, dress as if you were. Ironing your shirt can go a long way. Not only will it help your first impression, but you will feel the part if you are dressed the part.
Maintain Eye Contact
It may be tempting to look at your interviewer on the screen, however this will not actually translate to eye contact. To maintain eye contact, look into the web cam.
